In general, JVC (known in Japan as The Victor Company of Japan) is considered the “higher end” of camcorder manufacturers. It tends to have more features and a loftier reputation than competitors like Canon and Sony. So, if you are in the market for a premium product, consider a JVC Digital Camcorder.
With the Everio camcorder series, JVC began focusing on user experience and convenience, and put effort into software development.
JVC PICSIO GC-FM1A HD Camcorder
The Picsio GC-FM1A is a pocket-sized camcorder with a pocket-sized price. With a suggested retail price of about $200, this little baby can be had at many sources for about $120. It comes in a variety of fun colors – not just the typical black, but also “sparkling purple” and “brilliant blue.” It is a top-seller even though some of the reviews are lackluster. The size and position of the controls is a common complaint, although this may be inevitable with a camcorder the size of a cell phone.
The JVC Picsio GC-FMIA is an HD memory camera, and you can show its HD videos if you have an HDMI connection, so be sure to have the cables you need.
In praise of the camera, buyers mention its size, convenience, and price. It is an excellent starter camera for a kid. But picture quality, battery life, and non-intuitive controls are the complaints.
JVC GZ-HD500 80 GB High Definition HDD Camcorder
The JVC Everio GZ-HD500 is in the mid-range of JVC camcorder prices. It is a high-definition camcorder with a built-in hard drive containing 80 gigabytes of storage. This means you can record from 7 and 33 hours of video, depending upon your settings (high quality, of course, increases file size and takes up more space). You can transfer files to your computer with a simple USB cable. The cable is not included.
Picture quality is sharp, worthy of the HD label. It an Image Stabilizer which smooths video and prevents the “shaky-cam” effect. It also a Face Detection System and 20x optical zoom. This lightweight (two pounds) device fits neatly into the palm of your hand with a detachable hand-strap. Additional features include Manual, Program, and Automatic exposure modes, a 2.7-inch color LCD display with Laser Touch operation, helpful Super LoLux low light technology, Time-Lapse Recording, and Auto-Recording.
JVC Everio GZ-HM200 SD/SDHC HD Camcorder
The GZ-HM200 is another very popular JVC Everio entry in the HD camcorder field. The list price is $579 but vendors such as Amazon sell it much lower.
This device has dual SD card recording. It records continuously, switching from one card to the other so that recording time isn’t lost. This incredibly light camera weighs just 8.5 ounces.
The product is compatible with the iPod or iPhone. This means you can export video from the GZ-HM200 to your iTunes library with the One Touch Export function included with the camera. You can also use One Touch Export to upload video to YouTube.
Users rate this device highly, praising its picture quality and ease of use.
